Astronomers Announce Evidence That Our Solar System Has Nine Planets Once Again

New Candidate for Planet Nine
Astronomers analysing old infrared sky survey data may have found *a faint, slow-moving object* far beyond Neptune that could be a previously unknown ninth planet in our solar system. The object’s motion over 23 years hints at a very distant orbit consistent with a massive body rather than a static background source.

How It Was Detected
Researchers from National Central University in Taiwan compared infrared images from NASA’s Infrared Astronomical Satellite (IRAS) from 1983 with Japan’s AKARI mission data from 2006. They identified a source that appears to shift slowly, suggesting it could orbit the Sun at extreme distances—roughly 500 – 700 astronomical units (AU).

If It Is a Planet
Estimates suggest this object could be similar to 'ice giants' like Uranus or Neptune, with a mass "7–17 Ă— Earth’s mass" and very cold temperatures. Such characteristics explain why it’s hard to spot in visible light but detectable in infrared.

Link to Kuiper Belt Anomalies
The discovery supports long-standing theories that a distant planet influences the orbits of Kuiper Belt Objects (KBOs) — icy bodies whose irregular paths hint at gravitational tug from a massive unseen object.

Next Steps
The findings are "preliminary" and based on only two data points decades apart. Astronomers emphasize that "follow-up observations with modern telescopes" are needed to confirm whether it’s truly a planet and not another type of object.

In short: researchers may have uncovered "rare observational evidence" of a Planet Nine candidate using archival infrared surveys, but further study is required to verify its nature and orbit.

The Roman Space Telescope is simpler than the James Webb Space Telescope. It has a smaller main mirror—7.9 feet wide—about three times smaller than Webb’s. Roman cannot see as deeply into space as Webb, but it can see much larger areas of the sky at once. This wide view will allow scientists to count billions of stars and galaxies across the Universe and study dark matter and dark energy, which together make up about 95% of the Universe. The remaining 5% consists of ordinary matter that we can see and touch.

Roman is often compared with the Hubble Space Telescope because both have mirrors of the same size. As a result, Roman will produce images as sharp as Hubble’s. The big difference is inside the telescope. Roman uses advanced detectors that are especially sensitive to faint infrared light.

These detectors work in a way similar to night-vision devices, but they are designed to detect different wavelengths of light.

The detectors are part of Roman’s main camera, called the Wide Field Instrument. It contains 18 detectors, each with about 16 million pixels, forming a 300-megapixel camera. This makes it the largest infrared camera ever built. In comparison, Hubble’s infrared camera uses only one detector with about one million pixels.

Because of this powerful camera, Roman will observe a much larger area of space than Hubble. It can recreate Hubble’s famous Ultra Deep Field image with the same clarity, but over an area at least 100 times larger, revealing countless more stars and galaxies

Putin's Visit to India: Russian President Vladimir Putin is in New Delhi for a state visit to meet with Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Discussions are expected to focus on strengthening military and economic ties, with a major $2 billion deal to lease a Russian nuclear submarine reportedly finalized. The visit comes amid European pressure on India to urge Putin to end the Ukraine conflict
A G20 consensus declaration focusing on the climate crisis and debt relief was adopted, but Argentina did not endorse it due to references to the conflict in the Occupied Palestinian Territory.
A new study suggests Saturn's moon Mimas might have a hidden ocean beneath its surface, although the ice layer's thickness is a key factor in preventing the water from boiling.
